The GP free weekend gathered the motocross enthusiasts to Genk for a good cause as the eighth “Everts and friends" charity race featured many of the top GP riders. As the FIM World Championship tour took a break, many of the top riders lined up to the start in Genk for a good cause. The eighth “Everts and friends" charity race featured not only current GP stars, but also great motocross names from which the host Stefan Everts himself was one of the most interesting in the start.
ICE1Racing team colors were presented by the Portuguese rider Rui Gonçalves, who made his way all the way to the final. Also the team owner Kimi Räikkönen together with the team manager Antti Pyrhönen met the motocross fans. Räikkönen teamed up in the motocross-cyclocross relay and finished in the top four.
"This is a great event, we have enjoyed the day tremendously. It is great to see so many motocross fans enjoying the sport and supporting such a good cause", commented Räikkönen after the race.
Pyrhönen took part along with the GP starts and made it through to the second round.
"I love riding and today was truly a great day to return to the racing tracks", cheered the team manager Antti Pyrhönen, who finished his career as a professional rider last season. “I think we were riding really well with Kimi today, but the arm pump kept us from claiming the victory", laughed Pyrhönen.
The charity race supports the children and young people by donating all the proceeds for good cause. Visit Everts and friends for more details.
Raikkonen to race at ‘Everts & Friends’ charity event
Kimi Raikkonen has confirmed that he will be in action at the eighth edition of the ‘Everts & Friends Charity Race’ weekend this coming Sunday (21 July).
A unique motocross and cyclo-cross event, taking place on the Horensbergdam circuit in Genk, the ‘Everts & Friends’ spectacle raises money for youth and child charities, with Raikkonen listed as the special guest of the 2013 edition. The 2007 F1 world champion is not content with just being present in Belgium, however, with host – and motocross legend – Stefan Everts confirming that the Finn will be taking to the track.
"It is a unique opportunity for the spectators to meet Kimi in person but, moreover, he will be on a dirt bike and will join our ‘Cyclo MX Race’, teaming up with a Belgian cyclo-cross rider,” Everts confirmed, having recently spent a few days training with Raikkonen in Finland.
Raikkonen, who owns the Ice One Racing MX Team, will also make a rare appearance up close with the fans, with ten-time world champion Everts confirming that he ‘will also join our signing session – truly unique and a first for our country’.
The event has already revealed a host of leading motocross stars as, besides world champions Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings, almost the entire cream of the Belgian MX1 crop will be present, including Ken De Dycker, Kevin Strijbos, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Joel Roelants, Johan Boonen, Mike Verstraeten, Nick Triest and Danny Theybers.
French MX1 sensation, Gautier Paulin will complete a top list of international riders including Jordi Tixier, Glen Coldenhoff, Dean Ferris, Xavier Boog, Rui Goncalves, Petar Petrov, Eric Sorby, Maria Franke, Antti Pyrhönen, but the programme is not just about the big names, as classes for ‘Minis’ (50cc and 65cc), ‘Future Stars’ (85cc), ‘GP Stars’ (MX1/MX2/WMX), ‘Fun Bikes’ (mopeds/scooters) and ‘Golden Heroes’ (oldtimers) are also scheduled. In addition to the purely motorised action, the motocross-cyclocross relay race should prove to be a highlight, with stars from motocross and cyclocross alternating on the circuit
